I have to admit that right now, copywriting feels like a pretty silly job to me.

I mean, my mother-in-law is still going to work every day, even though she ticks more than one box of extra vulnerability to the virus. Why? Because she’s a nurse. Who works with cancer patients. How’s that for hero status?

And I…write copy for a living. To sell stuff.

Yes, it’s stuff I believe in. Stuff that helps people. But still, I’m not out there risking my own life to keep helping freakin’ cancer patients!

So while I see so many of my colleagues encouraging everyone to keep selling and keep working…

…part of me just wants to bake scones with my family and go for socially-distant hikes in the woods.

But the thing is, while those quiet times together have their place, I know my colleagues are right.

It doesn’t help anyone — not us, not our clients, not the end customers, not the economy — for us to just stop doing what we do. Especially when we’re in the incredibly privileged position to keep working — from home — just as we always have.

So while part of me wants to bake and hide out on the hiking trails … the bigger part of me knows that this isn’t the time to retreat.

And thankfully, I have an incredible roster of colleagues and mentors who are “not retreating” with me. Who are helping me navigate this difficult time.

I hope you have that, too.

If not, shoot me an email and let me know what’s on your mind about copywriting or our industry in general right now. Just use my contact form so I don’t get spammed by the spambots (the ONLY things that deserve a virus).

PS. If you’re looking for community AND you want to discover the secrets to winning control copy — then you might be a good fit for a case study group I’m starting in May.

It’s open for applications now.
